A Family Legacy Since 1978

Alan and Sue Johnson-Hill purchased Château Méaume in 1978 and transformed it into a benchmark producer. Decades before sustainable viticulture became an industry buzzword, they pioneered environmental practices that honoured the property's 230-year agricultural heritage dating back to 1795. For over 40 years, he nurtured the vineyard, built the winemaking facilities, and established Méaume's reputation for quality.

When Alan and Sue passed the torch in 2019, he entrusted the estate to his nephew Mark and Mark's wife Sandra - a carefully considered succession that ensured continuity of values. This wasn't a sale to investors or a corporate acquisition. It was a family transition built on shared commitment to the land and a long-term vision for the estate's future.

Today, Mark and Sandra carry forward Alan's pioneering spirit whilst bringing their own international perspective and fresh energy to Château Méaume. The mission remains unchanged: craft exceptional wines, respect the terroir, and welcome visitors to experience authentic vineyard life.

Mark Johnson-Hill - Propriétaire

Mark's connection to Château Méaume began in 1980 when, at just nine years old, he first visited his uncle Alan during a family holiday in France. That childhood visit planted a seed. Walking through the vineyards, exploring the cellars, breathing in the countryside air - Mark fell in love with the estate and dreamed of one day calling it home.

Life took him on a different path first. Born in Asia to English parents working abroad, Mark grew up following his parents' assignments worldwide before settling in the UK to attend Rugby School. Upon leaving school, he farmed in Zimbabwe, then spent over 30 years building a successful career with a major FMCG company, working across Asia, Africa, Latin America, and Europe. It was in Beijing where he met Sandra, beginning a partnership that would eventually lead them back to Bordeaux.

When the opportunity arose to purchase Château Méaume in March 2019, Mark realised his decades-old dream. He and Sandra relocated to France with their three children, trading corporate careers for vineyard rows and harvest seasons. For Mark, this wasn't a business transaction - it was coming home.

Mark brings his international experience and strategic thinking to the estate's development, focusing on building Château Méaume's reputation around the world whilst preserving its authentic character. He oversees the business operations, and long-term vision, but you'll often find him in the vineyard during harvest or hosting tastings in the cellar.

Sandra Johnson-Hill - Propriétaire

Sandra's path to Bordeaux began on her family's large cattle and grain farm in northern Manitoba, Canada. Her father, a Hungarian immigrant with an Austrian wife, built the operation from humble beginnings into the largest farm in northern Manitoba - a story of hard work, land stewardship, and resilience that shaped Sandra's values.

Growing up on the farm taught Sandra to read the rhythms of seasons, respect the land's limits, and understand that agriculture is a long-term commitment, not a short-term venture. Those lessons translate directly to running a sustainable vineyard and working farm. When Sandra walks the estate's 250 acres of vineyards, forest, pasture, and cattle land, she sees it through a farmer's eyes - as an ecosystem to be nurtured, not just a wine production facility.

Sandra holds a university degree in Urban & Regional Planning and Architecture and has worked on projects across Toronto, Europe, South Korea, and China. That global perspective informs her approach to hospitality at Château Méaume. She understands that modern wine tourists seek authentic experiences, not staged attractions. When guests stay in our luxury gîte, Sandra ensures they experience real countryside life - farm-to-table meals, conversations about sustainable agriculture, and genuine connection to the land.

Sandra manages the export relationships, accommodation offering, oversees our environmental practices, and brings warmth and practical wisdom to every aspect of the estate. Her farm background makes her a natural steward of Méaume's 230-year commitment to working in harmony with nature.

Bruno - Our Bordeaux Winemaker & Oenologue

Bruno is the skilled Bordeaux winemaker who transforms our estate-grown grapes into our well known wines that define Château Méaume. He has been part of the Méaume story since 2010, with Sue playing an integral role alongside Bruno in building the vineyard into what it is today. Bruno has been instrumental in developing our wine profile through meticulous terroir-focused work.

Bruno earned his degree in Biology & Earth Sciences from the University of Bordeaux before pursuing his passion for winemaking. He began his career in Pomerol, then expanded his expertise through internships at Argentine wineries, gaining a global perspective on viticulture. Upon returning to Bordeaux, Bruno joined the prestigious Rolland Laboratory, where he studied under the world famous Michel Rolland, establishing himself as a respected oenologue in the region's most demanding wine circles.

Today, Bruno serves as wine consultant to several prestigious estates across Bordeaux and Spain, but Château Méaume holds a special place in his work. He appreciates our family-owned approach, the freedom to prioritise quality over volume, and the patience to allow wines to develop properly. Our minimum two years of oak ageing isn't a marketing claim - it's Bruno's unwavering standard.

Bruno's winemaking philosophy centres on terroir expression. Our clay and sand soils, just 15 kilometres from Saint-Émilion and Pomerol, favour Merlot's rich, supple character. Bruno crafts blends that showcase this terroir - 90% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc, 2% Cabernet Sauvignon - whilst maintaining balance and elegance. The result: wines that earn 90-92 points from critics like The Wine Advocate whilst remaining approachable and food-friendly.

When you taste our wines, you're experiencing Bruno's dedication to authentic winemaking. No shortcuts, no manipulation, just patient cellar work guided by deep knowledge of our specific vineyard character.

Our Approach: People, Land, Wine

At Château Méaume, we believe great wine begins with people who care for the land. This philosophy connects everything we do.

Mark and Sandra didn't purchase an estate - they committed to stewarding it for the next generation. They see themselves as temporary custodians of land with a 230-year agricultural history, responsible for passing it on in better condition than they inherited it. That long-term thinking shapes every decision, from vineyard management to visitor experiences.

Bruno doesn't simply execute a winemaking formula. Together, they have built a deep connection to this estate — Bruno listens to what each vintage tells him, adapting his approach to honour the year's unique character.

This people-first approach extends to how we welcome visitors. When you stay at our gîte or book a tasting, you're not shuffled through a corporate tour. You meet the actual owners and winemaker. You taste wine whilst hearing about specific harvest challenges from the person who managed them. You experience our working estate as it truly functions - vines alongside cattle, forest alongside wine cellars, modern winemaking techniques alongside traditional values.

We're not trying to be the biggest Bordeaux producer or the most prestigious appellation. We aim to be the most authentic version of ourselves: a family-owned estate making honest wines and sharing genuine countryside hospitality
